    Reinforcement learning for energy-efficient control of multi-stage production lines with parallel machine workstations

    An effective approach to enhancing the sustainability of production systems is to use energy-efficient control (EEC) policies for optimal balancing of production rate and energy demand. Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms can be employed to successfully control production systems, even when there is a lack of prior knowledge about system parameters. Furthermore, recent research demonstrated that RL can be also applied for the optimal EEC of a single manufacturing workstation with parallel machines. The purpose of this study is to apply an RL for EEC approach to more workstations belonging to the same industrial production system from the automotive sector, without relying on full knowledge of system dynamics. This work aims to show how the RL for EEC of more workstations affects the overall production system in terms of throughput and energy consumption. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed model

    Fox News: Fair and Balanced? We Report. You Decide.

    The Fox News Channel has been claiming for more than a decade that their news channel is fair and balanced. To test this claim a statistical analysis was done on 32 partial transcripts of the Hannity and Colmes Shows posted on the internet with dates from February 16, 2003 to January 7, 2009. Results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the average number of words Sean Hannity spoke (397) and the average number of words Alan Colmes spoke (284) on the 32 partial transcripts. Hannity spoke more words than Colmes on 21 of the 32 partial transcripts and this observed frequency approached statistical significance. Based on the data collected from February 16, 2003 to January 7, 2009 the findings suggest that the Hannity and Colmes Show is not fair and balanced and that, by inference, perhaps neither may the Fox News Channel be fair and balanced.     Laue Lens Development for Hard X-rays (>60 keV)

    Results of reflectivity measurements of mosaic crystal samples of Cu (111) are reported. These tests were performed in the context of a feasibility study of a hard X-ray focusing telescope for space astronomy with energy passband from 60 to 600 keV. The technique envisaged is that of using mosaic crystals in transmission configuration that diffract X-rays for Bragg diffraction (Laue lens). The Laue lens assumed has a spherical shape with focal length ff. It is made of flat mosaic crystal tiles suitably positioned in the lens. The samples were grown and worked for this project at the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble (France), while the reflectivity tests were performed at the X-ray facility of the Physics Department of the University of Ferrara.Comment: 6 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Scienc

    FIELD INVERSION AND MACHINE LEARNING STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING RANS MODELLING IN TURBOMACHINERY

    Turbulence and transition modelling are critical aspects in the prediction of the flow field in turbomachinery. Recently, several research efforts have been devoted to the use of machine learning techniques for improving Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models. In this framework, a promising technique is represented by field inversion which requires to find an optimal correction field that minimises the error between numerical predictions and experimental data. In this work, Artificial Neural Networks and Random Forests are investigated as tools to generalise the correction provided by field inversion. An approach to automatically identify the regions where the correction model should be computed is proposed: this improves the fitting and reduces the calls to the model during the predictions. Furthermore, a correction-based weighting of the database is introduced in order to improve the training performances.     The entropy of randomized network ensembles

    Randomized network ensembles are the null models of real networks and are extensivelly used to compare a real system to a null hypothesis. In this paper we study network ensembles with the same degree distribution, the same degree-correlations or the same community structure of any given real network. We characterize these randomized network ensembles by their entropy, i.e. the normalized logarithm of the total number of networks which are part of these ensembles. We estimate the entropy of randomized ensembles starting from a large set of real directed and undirected networks. We propose entropy as an indicator to assess the role of each structural feature in a given real network.We observe that the ensembles with fixed scale-free degree distribution have smaller entropy than the ensembles with homogeneous degree distribution indicating a higher level of order in scale-free networks.Comment: (6 pages,1 figure,2 tables

    Mediation analysis of gestational age, congenital heart defects, and infant birth-weight

    Background In this study we assessed the mediation role of the gestational age on the effect of the infant’s congenital heart defects (CHD) on birth-weight. Methods We used secondary data from the Baltimore-Washington Infant Study (1981–1989). Mediation analysis was employed to investigate whether gestational age acted as a mediator of the association between CHD and reduced birth-weight. We estimated the mediated effect, the mediation proportion, and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) using several methods. Results There were 3362 CHD cases and 3564 controls in the dataset with mean birth-weight of 3071 (SD = 729) and 3353 (SD = 603) grams, respectively; the mean gestational age was 38.9 (SD = 2.7) and 39.6 (SD = 2.2) weeks, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, the estimated mediated effect by gestational age was 113.5 grams (95% CI, 92.4–134.2) and the mediation proportion was 40.7% (95% CI, 34.7%–46.6%), using the bootstrap approach. Conclusions Gestational age may account for about 41% of the overall effect of heart defects on reduced infant birth-weight. Improved prenatal care and other public health efforts that promote full term delivery, particularly targeting high-risk families and mothers known to be carrying a fetus with CHD, may therefore be expected to improve the birth-weight of these infants and their long term health
